Dear Friends and Colleagues!

It is a great honour to invite you to the 6th EAVP Annual Meeting in Slovakia, and introduce you to a part of our beauty-spot in the heart of Europe. In the year 2008, the town of Spišská Nová Ves celebrates the 740th anniversary of the first written reference to our town, and it welcomes many interesting and well-known people from social and cultural life. For the above-mentioned reason, our symposium EAVP is perceived not only as an important meeting of experts - palaeontologists from the whole of Europe - but also as an important social and cultural event and happening. The Museum of Spiš sincerely thanks the Organising Committee for its expression of confidence, and the possibility of undertaking the honoured task of organizing the 6th Annual meeting, and we all cordially look forward to welcoming you.

Organisation:
Zuzana Krempaská, Museum of Spiš, Spišská Nová Ves, Slovakia (muzspisa@sisoft.sk or krempaska1@post.sk) Martin Sabol PhD., Department of Geology and Paleontology Faculty of Science, Commenius University - Bratislava, Slovakia, sabol@fns.uniba.sk

In this first circular we provide you with preliminary information about this meeting.

Spišská Nová Ves - General Information

The oldest historical documents of this city are from 1268, but the archaeological finds reveal that civilization in this region date back to at least the 8th century. Spišská Nová Ves is located in the basin of the Hornád River. On the north it is bounded by the Levočské vrchy Mts. and on the south by the Spiš-Gemer rudohorie Mts. The town and its environs are very attractive both with their natural beauties and their culturo-historical heritage. The town's mining tradition is related to the rich occurrence of sites of iron, silver and copper ores and the rights of their exploitation. The ironworks of Konrad Gaal used to be the most famous landmark of the handicrafts. In the 18th century the city became the residency of the Provincial Governor of 16 Spiš cities and remained so until 1876. Not only is the lentil-shaped square in Spišská Nová Ves the longest square of this type in Europe, and the Roman-Catholic church tower the highest in Slovakia at 87 m tall, but the Provincial Governor's house, the Reduta, the building of the City Hall and others count among the real historical jewels of the town. The town offers cultural and sports events all the year round and it is the real gateway to the Slovak Paradise. More information can be found on the website www.mestosnv.sk
